Breast-Feeding or Bottle-Feeding

February 18th, 2012 No comments

Decide how you are going to feed your baby before birth. Breast-feeding has many benefits for the baby and many think it is best for the mother too, but the ultimate decision is the mother’s. A few rare medical conditions, such as severe breast infections or infant with a cleft palate, may make breast-feeding more difficult.

Most drugs taken by the mother will be passed to the infant through breast milk. Therefore, you should never take any drug without consulting your doctor first. Also, infections can be transmitted through breast milk, this includes HIV.

Similarly, mothers should not allow other women to breast-feed their infants because of the risk of infection of any transmittable agent. Many myths about breast-feeding make parents more anxious about this choice than they should be. Some include:

o Breast-feeding doesn’t depend on your breast size. Large breasts contain mostly fatty tissue and in no way increase the ability to breast feed

o Breast feeding does not interfere with poliovirus immunization

o Breast feeding does not cause more jaundice in newborns.

o Breast feeding does not cause sagging breast

o Although breast-feeding suppresses ovulation, it is not a reliable method of contraception

As mentioned, there are many benefits to breast feeding. Some benefits include:

o The baby receives nutrients in the proper proportion if the mother is eating a balanced diet. Iron and vitamin D are only occasionally need as supplements

o Breast feeding cost less than bottles and baby formula, and is more convenient.

o There is a less chance of contaminating the milk than with bottle-feeding

o Babies tend not to become fat as frequently as bottle-fed babies do. The composition and taste of breast changes during the course of feeding, so the baby will reject a breast after several minutes and move to the other, even though the first still contains milk

o Breast-fed babies may have fewer ear infections

o Breast-fed babies are less constipated, and have fewer irritations, also they have diarrhea less often

But there are also benefits to formula- or bottle-feeding. The father can become involved in feeding very early. There is also more freedom of movement for the mother. Also, today’s commercial formulas are high quality. Great efforts have been made to produce formulas that are as close breast milk as possible.

Where tap water is safe for you, it is safe for the baby. Sterilization is no longer necessary, but parents wishing to prepare several days’ worth of feedings in advance should consider it, because bacteria can grow in the formula after it has been fixed.

Boil new nipples in water for a few minutes several times before using. This will remove any bacteria or nitrosamides that some nipples may contain. Infants suck naturally by squeezing their lower jaws and gums using their tongues to push up on the nipple and keep it securely on the roof of their mouth.

The usual bottle nipple permits milk flow more easily than the breast does. This causes infants to exercise their jaws less and to stick their tongues outward instead of upward to slow the rush of milk.

Teenage Pregnancy Causes – Factors Responsible For Pregnancy Among Teens

January 11th, 2012 No comments

Sexual intercourse is the main reason behind any pregnancy. Most of the researchers did research to figure out the reason of widespread teenage pregnancy. Some people have a myth that teens have a desire to get pregnant but this is not true as almost 80% of pregnancies in teen age are unintentional.

According to the researchers, the main reason behind this is the lack of maturity, education regarding sexual intercourse, contraception and lack of personal responsibility in teen age. Moreover, it has been found that teenage pregnancy is also due to the employment opportunities and limited education or poverty.

No knowledge regarding birth control or understanding sex is one of the main fundamental cause of teenage pregnancy. Ignorance is also a major reason behind teenage pregnancy. If we look to the scenario in America, we can easily find teens, especially girls, get so much messages about sex. But these messages do not explain the consequences of teenage sex. It is shown as an immediate gratification which prepares girl for sex without adequate education. Although sex can be seen advertised in movies and television, but there is no equal initiative to educate about the birth control. Open discussions should be initiated about sex but this is very rare.

Any female could become pregnant if she has lack of control on her life or has low expectations regarding her future. In some cases, it has been found that teenage preganancy is also a result of depression that directs them towards risky sexual activities. Some teenage girls end up in pregnancy due to alcohol or drugs abuse which is the reason behind inadequate use of contraception.

Inadequate love from family or absence of a father figure causes the mindset of the teenage girl to be attracted towards an older man to receive affection which might end up in her pregnancy if that man has some other desires. In most of the cases, boyfriends have been the source of pregnancy in teenage girls as girls have an impression that sex would bring their boyfriends more close to them.

Researchers have discovered a large difference between the pregnancy rates in European countries and others due to better contraceptive services, low child poverty, acceptance of teenage sexuality and better sex education. For example, there is a 10 -fold difference between Holland and US.

To view the cause behind the teen pregnancy many surveys have been conducted on adolescents to try to understand their viewpoint. According to a study done in 1996 on 58% of boys and 76% of girls, most of the teenage girls had sex just to satisfy their boyfriends. One of the three teens of age between 15 to 17 have agreed that they were pressurized to have sex by their friends.

To shock the masses, in a study of 1997, it was revealed that 70% of girls feels embarrassed to purchase birth control or gain knowledge on sex from a doctor. It is very difficult to determine the relation between the teen pregnancy and its factors. However, researchers have agreed on a fact that teenagers should be educated about the contraceptive methods and consequences of unprotected sex.
