Common Pregnancy Questions

from: Marie Kearney Gordon - Guest Writer

Let us face it, whether it is your first, second, or more pregnancy, every expectant mother has questions. Although the material you can find on the Internet, from healthcare professionals, and even relevant personal experience is helpful, each pregnancy is different, and new situations arise all the time.

Having pregnancy questions is important for the well being of the mother and unborn child, and no one should ever feel uncomfortable, or that they are being a bother, to get the answers they need. With that in mind, here are a few more common pregnancy questions and their answers.

One of the most often heard of the pregnancy questions is, how much weight is healthy and normal to gain! The answer is that with a normal sized woman who is having a normal sized baby, the gain is usually between 25 and 35 pounds, but for an underweight mother, doctors may suggest a higher amount.

For an overweight mother, their recommendations may be to gain less if possible. The important thing for women of any size, is to eat regular healthy meals and stay hydrated, and the importance of this cannot be emphasized enough!

Another common question relates to exercise, namely, is it safe to exercise during pregnancy, but this pregnancy question is fairly straightforward.
If the new mother was active before the pregnancy began, then there is no reason why she cannot continue during her pregnancy, but of course using your common sense is a good idea. Check with a doctor if you have high blood pressure, or want to start a new exercise routine while pregnant.

Sweating and raising heart rates is fine as long as it is maintained at a moderate level. A pregnant woman will want to be sure that she drinks enough water, and avoids places where perspiration can occur freely, like a hot tub for example.

Diet restrictions certainly rank high on the list of pregnancy questions, but for the most part, there are few dietary restrictions during pregnancy for a healthy woman. However, experts do suggest eating only cooked meats. Sushi may need to be avoided at this time, and checking to be sure meat is fully cooked, would definitely limit some unpleasant problems.

It is also a good idea to be careful about ingesting raw eggs and unpasteurized cheeses, and caffeine intake should be limited. Overall the diet of a pregnant woman does not need to change dramatically for the health of the baby, though some consideration may be needed.

Pregnancy questions are an important part of maintaining a strong, healthy pregnancy. The resources for answers include your doctor, the many books written on the subject, and do not underestimate the knowledge of other women, who have also been there and done that.
